WHY DWI CASES ARE BECOMING EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE
In 2003 the Texas legislature passed a law requiring people convicted of DWI to pay an annual surcharge on their driver's license for the first thirty six months following their conviction. The failure to pay the surcharge will result in a suspension of the driver's license and the suspension will remain in effect until the surcharge is paid. The surcharge schedule is as follows.
$1,000 per year for a first DWI conviction.
$1,500 per year for a second or subsequent DWI conviction within thirty six
months of a previous conviction.
$2,000 per year if it is shown at trial that the alcohol concentration in a person's
blood, breath or urine was .16 or higher at the time the analysis was performed.
